Peaks and Valleys

A poem written with respect and as a tribute to all the mountains and valleys in our lives. They provide us perspective, and have their respective role to play so that we may appreciate and have gratitude for them all.

O God I love the peaks and valleys; they provide us beauty everyday
They’re a source of new perspectives as we travel through life’s fray
I love the new horizons we get to see from the peaks way up high
Yet I love the valley vistas where rivers flow and farmlands lie.

O God I love the peaks we look up at from the shadows far below
I admire the rough works of nature, the sculpture and uneven flow
The mountains are majestic as they reach up to touch the sky
The hills are works of artists and usually gentler to ones’ eye.

O God I love the valleys we look down at from places overhead
Their slopes make them different, as does the grandeur of riverbeds,
Yet it is how they’ve served as trails, and the rich soil underneath
That makes them stories of our peoples; a special history bequeathed.

O God I love the peaks and valleys; how they are symbols to us all
Without the two of them as complements, life would be pretty small
The peak is being fully conscious; closest to heaven and eternity
The valley’s the peaceful destination; the heart of growth and generosity.

O God I love the peaks and valleys; they provide us beauty everyday
They’re a source of new perspectives as we travel through life’s fray.
You have provided us peaks and valleys as a means to enjoy the earth
As I travel through and over them, I thank you for all they are worth.
