Written in February 2019, and clearly a bit on the weird side that day, this poem speaks to travelling into the unknown or off the beaten path. We don’t learn if we don’t venture further than we’ve been.
Today I took a walk around the block
Changed my route due to a new crosswalk
Turned left and right; got all turned about
Took out my compass as an old boy scout.
Decided to tour the whole neighbourhood
Took streets unknown that all looked good
I was able to play in a park with my dog
Had a lake for swimming with the frogs.
I followed a path on my way back home
Colours were certainly not monochrome
Walking through the forest, the path did split
Went back and forth like a complete misfit.
I checked the shadows, then headed west
Figured I’d enjoy my new found quest
I was off the beaten, and beyond the known
Refreshing to be outside my comfort zone.
I had my dog but he was chasing birds
I sat on a log, putting down these words
I was having fun even though a bit unsure
There’s nothing wrong with a little detour.
Today was like a door opening wide
I vow to take paths more diversified
Senses opened; my heart refreshed
I no longer live a life enmeshed.
