From April 2024, I was involved as a mentor in the confirmation process for youth at Orleans United Church. During the process, there are intense conversations about beliefs, faith, world and societal issues, and the list goes on. And for me, there was a reaffirmation of my beliefs and faith. One of the results was this poem.
I wish I had the answers to the questions we all face
To explain the mysteries of the human race
To take away the hurt and all of the unknown
To promise a beautiful life, all your very own
But then I don’t have such power of being
Nor the wisdom to make sense of all the whys
I have to find the strength; to know that I believe
That there’s a greater power beyond what we perceive
Life is really messy, and it’s easy to lose all hope
To wonder about the fairness and if we can even cope
Yet in those times of doubt and questioning our place
There is the manifestation and promise of God’s grace
How else to tell the story of how intricate is the earth
Or the glory of a miracle or the wonder of a child’s birth
We have the strength to face that which we must deal
And the power of love and forgiveness to help all heal
We’ve heard the stories of God, with the unknown face
Then there’s the Holy Spirit, who is all over the place
And there’s Jesus Christ, the chosen to be God’s son
This Holy Trinity is the package, coming as a three in one.
The paths we choose to take are shown by sun and stars
Yet the guidance for our choices comes from who we are
With the help of friends and family, and faith in God above
Our life is about rejoicing and living with gratitude and love
I acknowledge the doubt of faith that comes with all of this
I have been there myself when so much seems amiss
Yet I feel so much better with my life an interweave
With every challenge and triumph, I do still believe.
