I wrote this in June 2024 as I considered how I looked at myself. The mirror plays the role of easy to look at; reflection is about looking beyond and deeper. Both play an important role. Here’s hoping you like what you see no matter what!
When you look in the mirror, what do you see
The person you hope for or ‘is that really me?’
Are you preparing yourself for how you’ll be seen
Or taking a moment to reflect on where you’ve been
Mirrors can serve many of life’s needs
In a car, they’re for safety and of what you should heed
On a ceiling, they are supposed to contribute to fun
Where the one on the wall is a check that you’re done
Then there’s the one in the morning or before going to bed
When you get a close up and see things you might dread
Do those wrinkles come from frowning or how you behave
Do you let your hair grow more, or is it time to shave
Do you look skin deep or into the core
Are you content or is there a need to do more
None of us are perfect but what do you see
The blemishes of life or how you’re meant to be
Does the mirror tell your story and is it the truth
Or is it but a sign post comparing to youth
The mirror should be good for how you appear
Yet deeper reflection is needed to be really clear
Look deep in your eyes, right through the glass
Do you see what you dream-to-be or simply an ass
Are you aligned in body, mind and soul
What steps are you taking to make yourself whole
A mirror is a tool, and does many things
Reflection is about learning and what life brings
Both mirrors and reflection help who you are
Only one can make you a real superstar
Yet be thankful for mirrors as they give one pause
There may be faults but also silent applause
With that moment of reflection, one gets to smile and see you
And with gratitude acknowledge ‘that’s quite the view’.
