I wrote this poem this month (January 2025) to reflect my love of Canada and my travels across and throughout our country over the years. I’ve seen a lot and yet there is more to see.
Canadian Journey
Appointed as caretakers and stewards of this land
As Canadians we must take more than a stand
A duty to each other and those who may come
We may be humble in spirit but can beat our own drum
Those who came in the past be native or pioneers
Built our country with strength and by overcoming fears
They built it together with learning and grace
Creating and defining as they made it our place
Rich in minerals, gas, trees, water and fresh air
Our geography is spacious and we’ve room to spare
It takes many days to traverse from east to west
The debate lasts forever as to where is the best
Be it the Rock where they live and know how to have fun
Or on the Island with red beaches and golf ‘til one’s done
Or listen to celtic music while following the Cape coast
Or visit friendly Maritime towns with many reasons to boast
Then there is Quebec with its’ syrup and poutine
Culture, arts and the Canadiens comprise the whole scene
Through Ontario and cities which continue to sprawl
To life in the north where nature is king and there are few walls
Through the vast prairie lands where farms are not small
The pioneer spirit is strong and the people stand tall
Curling, hockey and football all make their mark
With sunshine aplenty and stars which lighten the dark
Through the Rockies with its glaciers, mountains and streams
The land people ski and hike in following their dreams
To the coast where forests grow right up to the sea
And the people work, play, live and are glad to be
Up in the north, the beauty lies in the space
The rivers are large and one lives with but a trace
The northern lights are brilliant as they light the skies
Life in God’s wilderness is both tough and a prize
We’ve every right to stand proud even as we learn
We’ve come far together and have much to yearn
Proud of what we have and how we help in this world
Proud of who we are and when our flag flies unfurled.
