I wrote this poem in February 2025 as part of what turned out to be a series of poetry on the subject of Canada. Whether under attack by others, or simply in the face of everyday, there is so much power and spirit that defines Canada and Canadians that will only get stronger through our celebration of being one.
We’re a country of people from both near and far
Living on a land beneath northern skies and star
We’re proud of our heritage and from whence we came
We’re proud to be called Canadian by any like name
Our founding peoples are native to this land
We’re now joined as immigrants and natives, hand-in-hand
We’re diverse in what we bring and how we got here
Yet strong in our values and what we hold dear
We’re free and care for both our country and world
We love to see our flag flying over us all unfurled
We’d rather work with others and respect that we’re one
Yet never underestimate our heart as we’re second to none
We love our geography and all our open space
With three oceans around us and our special place
We’ve mountains, hills, forests, tundra and plains
Our lakes and rivers connect us across our domain
We’re stewards of our land, water, resources and air
We try to use them wisely and demonstrate we care
We’re slowly getting better as we’re open to learn
Respecting what we have and the future we do yearn
With passion we play and are called the crazy canucks
Be it in sports with rocks, skis, balls or even little pucks
It’s like how we bring our energy and brains to new frontiers
With determination we’re building and will for many years
We strive for social justice and a life accessible for all
Where we can realize our potential and are able to stand tall
We bring our joy of living through our music and our arts
Reflective of who we are, with our brains and our hearts
We stand strong together on our lands and on the seas
Never try to break us as our spirit is what sets us free
Our hearts beat with one rhythm as we work, play and roam
Canada is our country and will forever be our home
