Kindly the Elf

Written in November 2025, this poem speaks to both the Christmas season and to the theme of ‘kindness’. Kindness always seems in short supply when one considers how people can be and how they present themselves both in person and on social media. And in a world in serious need for kindness as a daily habit, one is reminded of the importance of year around kindness; not only during the Christmas season.

Kindly was relaxing in the lounge for the elves
A sanctuary of quiet for to be amongst themselves
In the height of Christmas season with pressure and stress
Santa’s packing house a whirl of activity and a real mess

Kindly had been on the road since January past
The year more complex and busier than originally forecast
As Chief Elf of Kindness, her expertise was in great demand
For a world stressed out and conflict being constantly fanned

Kindness is not complicated and yet in short supply
Power hungry leaders modelling behaviour that makes people cry
From Tanzania, Gaza, Sudan, Russia and in the Ukraine
Throughout North America, peoples’ mental health under strain

Kindly had been everywhere with her little team
Smiling and hugging with words soothing like a cool cream
Acts of kindness spreading hope and caring for people in need
Changing the world for better by each word and deed

In their wake, individuals and groups re-gained their strength
Kindness reinforcing the power of the spirit to its full length
A free coffee, an errand done, or a shoulder on which to lean
Standing together for kindness and against the obscene

Kindly’s job now was to be with the elves and to offer care
Ensuring each elf’s behaviour was at its best with kindness to share
Santa expected each elf to be healthy and emotionally fine
Kindly strived through kindness to help them be on cloud nine

Kindness is a need from the start to end of the year
From the north to the south pole, and from both far and near
Thank goodness for Kindly and her team for we need their kind
Yet kindness from all of us would bring true peace of mind
