In the spirit of Christmas, and keeping in mind how significant the game of hockey is to the Canadian culture, this poem brings them both together. Written in December 2025, this poem celebrates joy and fun, and hopefully inspires goodwill amongst all.
It’s Christmas season and there’s a hockey game
Even with this holiday season, the goal remains the same
While sugar plums may be dancing in kids’ heads
The two teams are wearing their greens and reds
Team Candy Cane is dressed in red and white stripes
Team Mistletoe has white berries and green tone pipes
Helmets are white or red while all sticks are bright green
All is very colourful and quite the Christmas scene
The whistle blows to the tune of Let it Snow
The puck is dropped by a ref with a red nose all aglow
The refs are dressed with antlers as if reindeers
All the fans are laughing with seasonal cheers
The play is fast and there are no fights
When goals are scored, it is with flashing lights
Players play with joy and are at their best
Santa is watching as the game’s special guest
When the game is over, the refs and players do sing
Fun and spiritual Christmas songs including we three kings
The Christmas spirit of joy and peace, together they show
Hockey players all singing as if candy canes and mistletoe
It’s not a silent night and there is no manger on site
There are no shepherds around nor angels in flight
What there is for all is goodwill and a spirit of hope
The game of hockey helping each to do more than cope.
