48 Hours – A Story of Choices

48 Hours – A Story of Choices is about a woman who lives with choices during her relationship with her husband, and ultimately with a choice when there is another case of physical abuse and violence.  The book also includes a small collection of poetry written and inspired by victims of abuse and by those who support these individuals in moving forward.  The book is intended to raise awareness of this societal issue and to help open conversations as part of removing stigma and developing solutions.  There is a trigger warning for those who have lived with abuse or violence.

The Story behind 48 Hours – A Story of Choices

Domestic or intimate partner violence is a reality with a variety of looks.  This story is about choices made in the face of such violence, particularly those related to accepting abuse or leaving a relationship.  These choices take strength and courage beyond comprehension for barriers are often significant and the unknown great.

I began to write this story in 2023 after volunteering with Shelter Movers Ottawa (SMO) beginning in 2021.  It took shape and evolved as I gained a greater understanding of the prevalence of abuse and the life led by those being subjected to abuse – intimate, domestic, human trafficking, and more.  I had drafts reviewed by SMO colleagues and discussed life in a shelter with staff members of Lanark County Interval House and Community Support.

Even as I wrote this story, a number of male volunteers with SMO were asked to speak to how males could be engaged in the societal change process needed to deal with violence and abuse.   All of us spoke to how important it is for males to be active in addressing this issue which impacts ALL of us.  Be aware.  Stand up.  Speak out.  This story is part of my engagement.
