I wrote this poem in January 2017. This is one of my very first poems, and it was about expressing thoughts and feelings more than adopting any particular structure. As with some other poems I write, I like the use of a ‘refrain’. A refrain reminds us of the key message that ties the poem together.
And there is no question that when it comes to ‘change’, having a constancy in our life takes on additional importance, enabling us to ground our emotional, spiritual and mental well-being. For me, God’s grace and presence provides that rock,
Refrain
Everywhere there is change and yet you are near
Things are changing faster, and yet you keep pace
Change is all about us, sparking both hope and fear
You’re our inspiration and we lovingly you embrace.
Verses
The space we do inhabit is changing day by day
The sun is getting warmer yet winter storms are everywhere
Water levels are arising even as we have much less
Climate change is a happening; it’s already a real mess.
The world is getting smaller; no distance too far
Our communications move faster; we’re only a touch away
Life’s pressures are with us always no matter where we are
There’s often no separation between our work and play.
The borders we were used to no longer stop the flow
Our money’s interchangeable and innovation worldwide
Our peoples are ever moving, creating stress throughout the land
We cannot stop; we must adapt yet need some guiding hands.
The choice is ours to grow and change; to learn and appreciate
With outstretched hands and loving hearts, building bridges as we go
Let’s be as one and be the change; with God’s grace our guiding strength
A world of peace; of hope; of joy and love, the change we can sustain.
