If you want to make God laugh…

I wrote this in October 2018 after reading an article about how people like to plan and control their lives, including the consequences of actions and decisions, as if they are the only ones on earth that matter. And yet, God (or whatever may be the name you use when referring to your maker) has a view to how things unfold. I had fun with this, and every time I read it, I am reminded of how we can and must plan, but…

Refrain

If you want to make God laugh, tell him you have a plan
If you want to make God smile, tell him about the power of man
If you want to make God chuckle, tell him he can take a break
If you want to make God roar out loud, tell him it’s all a piece of cake

Verses

It started with a vision to create a universe and planet Earth
Six days after lots of creativity and work, it’s like he’d given birth
On the seventh day as he took a break and reviewed the plan
He looked about and wanly smiled; the $#&@ had just hit the fan

Was the problem the new light, created with the night and day
Or was it the sky dome he’d put in place to keep the waters away
As he cast his eyes over the land masses and all the plants below
He wondered about the fruits and flowers, and the rivers as they flowed.

There was beauty in the sun and moon, and all the stars at night
But perhaps it was their pattern or how the sun gave both heat and light
Day five he had created the water creatures and the sky filled with birds
He thought he had worked it all out with actions greater than words

Then there’d been Day Six when he’d put animals across the lands
From cats and dogs and elephants, he’d placed none in command
He had capped off his works with human beings in the likeness of himself
He’d even granted them the power to make decisions amongst themselves

Suddenly it hit him on this day he thought he deserved to have a rest
His plan had been a good one, built on the premise that all would do their best
The fault was the illusion that these humans had the wisdom to exercise control
To complement their mental and physical strength with both heart and soul

They thought they had the power to act as if they were the almighty one
As if their plans and actions would all work out when all was said and done
The unknown to all of them was that God would never again take a day of rest
There would be consequences for actions but souls would always be blessed
