Hello everyone. Winter can be a wonderful time of year, and this year we are certainly getting the frigid temperatures and snow associated with winter here in Canada. The poem highlighted in this blog is one from December 2018 and entitled Sounds of Winter. As you read it, I am hopeful that you will hear these sounds and all those which you think of when you experience winter.
January has been a great month for me when it comes to writing. I completed several poems and a couple of short stories, and even attended a song writing workshop. So as a writer, I would have to say its’ been productive and successful. I am hopeful that I continue to be inspired and able to write and learn over the coming weeks.
I am currently compiling a collection of all of my poetry in celebration of over 100 poems written during the past eight years. My plan is to complete this project in the Spring.
On other fronts, this month has proven to be interesting when it comes to politics and international affairs. May we be able to keep our head and focus on what really matters as a country in the face of the garbage being dumped on us by those in the USA!
On the matter of health and heart, I am still waiting for a surgery date. This is stressful for both Line and I with the challenge of the unknown and the uncertainty created for any planning of future life activity. Our focus each day is to keep things simple and to try to relax. One day at a time.
In that vein, I am going to keep this message short. I wish you all the best, and hope you get to enjoy winter.
Sounds of Winter
The crunch of snow; the crack of ice
The sparkle of our northern paradise
The friendly yells of snowball fights
The silence of long, frigid nights.
The snap as branches bend and break
The noises heard clear across frozen lakes
The thump of snow falling from the trees
The human sounds of cough and sneeze.
The pound of sleds heading down the hills
The slurp of hot drinks fighting off the chills
The caroling carries warmth and love
The reverent walks beneath stars above.
The drip of icicles as the sun shines warm
The howling winds bringing snowy storms
The roar of engines fighting off the cold
The story telling of wintery days of old
The slap of sticks as they hit the puck
The spinning tires of cars well stuck
The ‘hurry hard’ calls as rocks are thrown
The silent curses as shots are blown
The cries of ‘look out’ when ones skates won’t stop
The swoosh of skis coming from way up top
The sucking of boots in a walk through slush
The bark of dogs as their drivers ‘mush’
The laughter of kids making men of snow
The trickle of waters that still do flow
The zip of snow coats as school bells do ring
The sounds of winter as we wait for Spring.
