I wrote this poem in May 2019 as a first crack at a hymn about one of the most famous people in the Christmas story and Christianity – Joseph, the husband of Mary and ultimately the earth father of Jesus. And yet despite his notoriety, he is largely an unknown and behind the scenes in the story. Unfortunately, I have been unable to advance this further but perhaps, some day.
Refrain
Hello my God, it has been a journey
From that day not so long ago
Hello my God, do you remember
It’s me Joseph, the guy no one really knows
Verses
My lineage includes several kings
Yet I am one of simpler things
My learnings have said to stand by you
Guided to be both just and true.
I am a carpenter; my father’s trade
As a craftsman, I like things handmade
I need no spotlight; am here to serve
My faith in you will never swerve
Your choice of me did really shock
To say the least my world was rocked
I’ve stood by Mary since the angels came
Even as many others did try to shame
I am a quiet man and enjoy my life
I love Mary and made her my wife .
We raise our family to know your love
Our faith is in you, our God above.
I share with you all the love and joy
Of Jesus your son, now a growing boy
I am trying my best to guide his life
To be there for him in calm and strife.
I accept my role as a chosen one
Will serve you God and will never run
I thank you for the chance to serve
It’s not what you ask, but you deserve.
