I wrote this poem in April 2020. Even then COVID isolation was impacting each of us, and I found it therapeutic to write to the positives in life. And even today, contentment comes from so many special things in our lives.
I am thankful for the sun’s warmth and bright light
I am grateful for the wind that gives us kites
I like the rain that makes the grass green
I love hot chocolate that comes from a bean
I smile when I hear the birds tweet in the trees
And love the taste of honey made by the bees
My mouth comes alive with fresh orange juice
And I like hearing the honk of a Canada goose
My taste buds savour desserts and most sweets
But my heart is full when my dog lies on my feet
I get all caught up in reading a good book
And really appreciate someone who can cook
My soul soars when I hear those gifted with voice
And to live in a country where we do have choice
I am so happy when my team or the underdog wins
And there’s a special feeling being one of the twins
There is joy that comes from a blooming flower
Or for that matter, even taking a hot shower
One has to feel great when a child joyfully laughs
And have good memories from old family photographs
I get a warm feeling when there are people who care
And refreshment from being able to breathe fresh air
I like walks in the woods when it’s quiet all around
And admire those who contribute to life being a clown
There is contentment in having a loving wife
And a sense of value when helping others in life
There is warmth that comes from a smile given in gratitude
And of course, I am very thankful for having food
There are times I may be thrown curves or feel life is not fair
I gather comfort from knowing there is power in prayer
Contentment can often come from the simple things
It is the power inside you that gives you wings.
