Towards the New Normal

Written in May 2020, this is me trying to figure out what next – and this was during the very early days of COVID. I learned quickly that it was OK not to be OK but geez, that was a rough period for us all.

I think I’m fine but perhaps I am not
I have my health yet I am fraught
With a new normal there’s unknown
It’s like a tumbleweed being blown.

From being active and on the go
Being now isolated with no veto
From dawn to dusk, there is only time
We are living a brand new paradigm.

I live in a big house with lots of space
But there is way too much face-to-face
Yet if I were alone within four walls
I’d probably want to jump o’er Niagara Falls.

From hugs and handshakes as coexistence
It’s ‘stay at home’ and maintain the distance
With family and friends both near and far
We call and text, and don’t use the car.

As for sports, there are drafts and replays
And in the parks, it’s ‘stay on walkways’
We used to travel on boats and planes
But now stay closer as we use our brains.

We wear masks and clean shopping carts
We listen to news with breaking hearts
Our church and schools are now on-line
And it’s in our kitchen where we wine and dine.

It’s not the new normal will be all that bad
Yet with the changes, there’s been lots of sad
We live not knowing and with lots of choice
Our goal is a future where we do rejoice.

These past few weeks have seemed much longer
I’ve not yet broken and am getting stronger
I do hope and pray that together we’ll grow
As we travel the storm and sight new rainbows.
