In June 2023, I wrote this poem about a place that plays a key role in my reflections and writing. Each of us needs at least one place. My backyard is one for me.
We each seek our place in this land we all know
Our corner of living heaven where we may glow
For some it’s a journey with an elusive goal
For others it’s as simple as a tree on a knoll.
With good fortune or fate dealt as a good hand
Many of us discover our own holy land
It could be out in the woods, or floating on the lake
Where every morning we’d like to awake.
We have found our oasis to be our own backyard
It is like creating and living in a charming postcard
There the quiet abounds no matter the noise
Where we discover ourselves and regain our poise
Yes, there is a fence where the squirrels do run
Yet we need it for the pool where we have fun
The fence protects the dog which lies by our sides
And defines this part of heaven where we do abide
The trees around us provide a slight calming effect
But it is the flourishing flowers that make it perfect
They brighten the space, give it the splendour
Serve as the colour where we peacefully languor.
The birds and butterflies flit and fly all about
With food to eat and baths distributed throughout
We get to sit under the sun or umbrella shade
Enjoying the fruits of our labour, being all handmade
We count our blessings for this little oasis
We’ve grown to love it most of all other places
We pride ourselves for the care we’ve given this land
This backyard oasis; our home and heartland.
