Being an artist, as a poet, the creative part of my mind takes me into pretty outlandish directions at times. It is like freeing up my childhood mind and living in a fantasy world. And yet as I write with these notions passing through my grey matter, I find myself adding a quirk. That quirk being reflecting on how the fantasy might exist in our real world.
One day in June 2023 as I relaxed in the backyard shade, I was taken on a trip. This trip was about music and the variety of ways it plays such a large part in our lives – whether we are musical or not. In that context, I thought about musical instruments, and somehow my mind made the leap to the multitude of ways life could be reflected in musical terms.
And in the end, the words came to me that are reflected in I am Music. A fun piece of poetry with life overtone.
What instrument or form of music would you like to be? How does music impact your world? How could music have a greater influence?
If my life was music, what would I be
An instrument, song, or a piano key?
Imagine the joy that would come with such grace
From being the reason for a smile on each face
Let’s say I was a singer, making my voice heard
Be it jazz, rock or pop, or a country songbird
Writing the lyrics and attaching them to notes
Compressing my diaphragm up through my throat
Or I could simply be a note, either flat or sharp
That could be played by a flute, trumpet or harp
Being rung in a church bell choir on a Sunday
Or part of Bach’s music that symphonies play
Maybe I am the beat played on the bass drums
Or the pattern played as the guitar it is strummed
Or imagine being the sheet music to a song
Enabling everyone to play, or to sing along
I could be a soloist, a duo or an entire band
Playing rock ‘n roll music in an outdoor bandstand
Or be the voice of an opera tenor on a big stage
Opening hearts and minds of many, no matter their age
I could be the tuba or cymbols making an emphatic point
Or perhaps a jukebox in your neighbourhood joint
Maybe a bagpipe with its reeds blown by air
Engaging dancers and warriors in ways beyond compare
To be a song sung in a choir or even the shower
Be it happy or sad, there is such power
Able to share a story or feelings with a tune
Changing the moment be it day or under the moon
Alas I am not intended an instrument or note to be
I live with the talents and voice God has given to me
However, I am music; the sound that others hear
May my lyrics and tunes be always sincere.
