My mother died on November 1, 2023 and I wrote this poem one month later as a dedication to her and her life as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt.
It’s been a month since she left this earth
Ninety-two years after her mother gave her birth
Do we miss her; yes, for sure and of course
Difficult not to as she was such a force
On the other hand, she is still very much here
She’ll not be forgotten; that is clear
We’re using her car, piano and tea trolley
Even her ice cream scoop to avoid melancholy.
There are the memories which bring smiles and tears
She has been ever present with us for many years
There are the photos of her be she young or old
And the many stories she’s written and being told
Her strength is a model for when we need to dig down deep
She cared for many and loved to both laugh and weep
She feared not to have a view nor to learn something new
Yet she remained authentic and to herself was always true
She made a difference and lived her life with faith
She is now an angel for God has saith
But more than the things and what she’s done
It’s the joy of life she shared with her loved ones
Forever she’ll live on and we will remember
I speak for me and every family member
She has now joined our heavenly family chorus
And we do not doubt that she is watching o’er us.
