I wrote this poem in April 2025 to capture my interpretation of material included in Health for All, A Doctor’s Prescription for a Healthier Canada, a book written by Dr. Jane Philpott. Not only does Dr. Philpott speak to the importance of investing in new approaches to primary care, she speaks to the critical aspect of spirituality in individual and societal wellness. I have approval from Dr. Philpott for the sharing of this poem.
We seek wellness for each and for us all
One where we can rise up after a fall
More than physical, we need to be whole
Nurtured and fed by a healthy soul
A faith in something bigger or even divine
Enabling resilience and all about us shine
Where we’re not alone or have no reason to hope
A strength in trying times when we can but cope
Mental well-being where we can look ahead
To a new tomorrow filled with more than dread
Optimistic anticipation that the future will be fine
Like being on the end of receiving a high sign
A hope that sustains us and there are people who care
Where no one is alone and has others to share
Hope is grounded in faith and yet is the start of it all
Helping in transitions and over the long haul
Then for us to be well, we need each to belong
Loved unconditionally which is like our own song
Secure and accepted for who we each are
Connected at all times be we near or far
With hope and belonging, we live the power of prayer
We’re not alone and tomorrow, there’ll be fresh air
We have an understanding of what we’re going through
And if we’re patient, there’ll be alignment with all things true
With this balance and meaning, we’re able to bounce back
From the unknowns and curve balls, and things out of whack
This mental and spiritual wellness feeds our soul
Giving new perspectives and helping to make us whole
With this greater well-being, we know we’ll be alright
Able to focus on our own purpose; our star shining bright
We’re here for a reason and each very worthwhile
Our own wellness is assured; we make each other smile
This all should happen and assumes we are each well
However, we also need to help by ringing the bell
Staying tuned and helping, being there for the other
We’re a better world when living as sister and brother.
