Another of my Canadian theme poems, and written in May 2025, this one is a message or reminder of how we are a country comprised largely of immigrants – diverse in every way that our country has been and continues to be. With arms wide open, we welcome those who make Canada a great country.
We are over 40 million spread across our land
So, you’ll not know everyone or be able to shake their hand
Many are native with ancestors going back through time
Most have come from elsewhere; diversity and strength combine
Our land is spread many miles with three oceans as our sides
It takes two weeks to drive across the country so it is very wide
So large that we measure 4.5 hours of difference on the clock
You would need a few months if you were to choose to run or walk
Our culture is very rich for our history is not the same
We speak many languages although two are official by name
We celebrate our diversity as we seek to define who we are
Building understanding and new bridges from near and far
Our differences could define us and even tear us apart
Yet over time we’ve found what’s common in our head and heart
We’re pioneers with dreams who wish each other the best
To overcome our challenges, we recognize we’re truly blessed
We welcome those who choose Canada as their place to grow
With a dedication to work hard whether facing sun or snow
We’re ready to give a hand up to help new dreams come true
If we each make a difference, we’re a village through and through
So welcome to Canada with our arms open warm and wide
We expect and hope that you’ll soon be able to show your pride
It takes each of us to grow this country; to make it the place to be
So, thanks for coming and who you are; you and I make us ‘we’
