I wrote this poem in May 2025 in celebration of our flag’s 60th birthday. It flies over us all the time no matter where we are, and is recognized around the world of what Canada represents. O Canada!
The red and white flies o’er us and in our hearts
It says we’re greater than the sum of our parts
The flag is Canadian and emblematic of who we are
Symbolic of our strength and unity, and our guiding star
The maple leaf reflects our values and is the centre of our flag
Red and simple with its clarity leaving no need to further brag
Long recognized as saying ‘Canada’ wherever we may be
The maple leaf represents all of us and that we’re truly free
The red and white honours our past and our natural beauty
And serves to drape around us when doing our national duty
Red represents prosperity and hope, both for which we strive
White reflects the peace and honesty in how we live our lives
We fly our flag proudly and even wear it on our chest
Not saying we’re better but that we’re doing our best
We sing ‘O Canada’ with passion when our flag is flown
We are one people, standing for what we’ve always known.
We’re a sovereign nation with a flag of which we’re proud
A flag for each and all of us and a country so well endowed
Our flag is always with us; the red and white clear when unfurled
Signalling one Canada at home and all around the world
