In June 2025, Line (my wife), Maxime (our son) and I travelled to Alberta to visit the new person in our life – Madeline. This poem was written ten days later to capture this life changing moment.
A visit with anticipation and much desire
We’d been in a plane but were feeling much higher
We’d seen only photos but needed to touch
To be able to hold and love you so much
We held you close with hearts beating as one
Savouring the moment under the Alberta sun
We rocked and swayed you ‘til you went to sleep
Gazing at your sweet face with memories to keep
This was the first time we were able to hold and hug
So, forgive us dear one if we held you a bit snug
At just six weeks old, you would not yet know
How your little face made us feel all aglow
Each time you smiled with your mouth and eyes
Life was more beautiful and there were no cries
Peaceful and serene, you looked around
Wondering what in the world was going down
We loved when you held on tight with little fingers
Making connections with feelings that still linger
And watching you as you learned to move about
We were near the beginning; there was no doubt
Madeline Rose, you are special and will always be
To your uncle max, grandpa and mamieli
You are a gift to your parents and to us three
We loved our first visit with our little sweet pea.
