I wrote this poem in August 2025 as a dedication to all the poets in the world who share their creativity and inspiration, and by so doing, help to make this world a better place to live. And at the same time, I also intended to provide a perspective on the writing of poetry and what comes from the heart and mind of the poet in putting words to paper.
Poetry provides a means to tell a story
To share the possible and celebrate glory
Opening minds and hearts to be full
Encouraging living lives to being brimful
To enable thinking beyond what we’ve been told
Stretching and changing so as to be bold
Poetry is about a perspective unique to the one
The one who feels and writes for work or fun
Exposing inner self to be unique and walk ones’ own way
Perhaps not conforming to how others think or say
To the music’s beat aligned with ones’ values and beliefs
Be it founded in happiness, joy, sadness or even grief
To write with passion while exploring the unknown
Challenging traditions or limits that may be overblown
Poetry is not about the rules or the way its been done
But to live on the edge with contentment being second to none
Poetry means being true to the person one is living to be
Speaking with conviction with a spirit alive and free
Laughing and crying as one seizes the moment or day
Striving to make a difference or find comfort as they do pray
Poetry is a journey and a way to always improve
To go beyond the limits while seeking ones’ groove
A mirror of life as it is meant to be lived with truth
With a search for wisdom and the vitality of youth
A poet is a seeker not afraid to bare their soul
Willing to share with emotion and a desire to be whole
An individual with respect for life while being unorthodox
Living life fully without accepting life in another’s box
So to the poet, go forth and share what you write
Life is richer for the thoughts, emotions or actions you incite
Bring your passion and caring so we’re in a better place
You make a difference in how life we do embrace
And to those who read the words written in this form
Know the poet needs no recognition of how they perform
Yet sit for a moment and ponder what’s been shared
Words meant to inspire by someone who has cared
