Senior Life

I wrote this poem in November 2025. We each may have perspectives of what life is like as a senior, and then once one is a senior, our perspective or understanding will surely be enriched. There is no question though at this point in time in life, we would each have to recognize and accept that we have fewer years ahead than behind. As a result, our focus naturally changes to living for the present rather than for the long term, and we increasingly wonder what our legacy may be. Enjoy the moment and create memories.

Arthritis, insomnia, aches, bursitis, and gout
New words being used of what aging is about
As we age and our bodies go through change
Our language and worries can be a might strange

We take naps in the day time and like a routine
We’re encouraged to eat better, and much less poutine
No matter the temperature, a sweater is always a must
We make more lists as our memory, we no longer trust

Then there is how we increasingly drive
With a greater focus on slower so we all thrive
Perhaps it is an awareness of taking our time
Enjoying the moment, and redefining our prime

We’re still active and may have lots on the go
With fewer years ahead yet with a desire to further grow
We bicycle, play sports, garden and are rarely home
We pursue new interests with passion and continue to roam

We think of our lives and all that we have heard and seen
For the most part, we’re likely happy for what has been
We’re glad to see changes that will improve the life of all
Be they large in impact or in how we deal with even the small

We’re getting older and have different priorities than before
We strive to learn technology and buying without going to stores
A slower walk on our street or in a neighbourhood park
Is a chance for sunshine, seeing others and hearing dogs bark

We like to tell stories of family and our ever-lengthening past
Sharing our perspectives from all experiences amassed
A simple means to create wisdom amongst those who are next up
A form of our legacy as in passing to others our life’s cup

We live for today and yet still hope for tomorrow
Investing in living and paying off debts we may owe
Doing what brings happiness and forgiving past wrongs
Thankful for love and singing our favourite old songs

We love quiet moments yet smiles and laughs most enjoy
Sharing and feeling good is like our special new toy
More than the things that can be either bought and sold
We appreciate the giving of time as our life’s real gold
