Madeline – A Christmas Visit

We had the pleasure of visiting our granddaughter just prior to Christmas 2025 and spending several days with her and her parents. This poem written on January 3, 2026, captures those moments of grandparents connecting with their granddaughter in our long distant relationship.

It’s been three months and was almost Christmas day
Glad we could be with you for another stay
You are your own person and that is very clear
Your character is showing and you are a special dear

Changes are happening including the presence of new teeth
Eating different foods while sitting on your underneath
We look into your eyes and get a stare back in return
You don’t know what to call it but we call it ‘to learn’

You want to know who we are and what we are to you
Can you trust us and will we always be true
Every time you see us and look into our face
You’re making your own facial recognition filing place

You’re getting stronger and we love to see you as you rock
You are almost crawling with knees ready and arms in a lock
And your rolls are a thing of beauty as you twist all about
The start of always moving of that there is no doubt

We enjoyed the moments where we could take you in our arms
Showing that there was no cause for any fire alarms
But our favourite times were simply watching and listening to you
Singing, reading, and being, and playing with you too.

Mamieli and Grandpa, we are the parents of your dad
To have you as our granddaughter, we’re especially glad
This poem is part of our story as we build our life with you
No matter the language, c’est vrai, nous t’aimons beaucoup
