I wrote this poem on January 12, 2026. In the face of more American rhetoric and authoritarian behaviour both domestically and internationally, the world has clearly had enough. There is zero respect for American leadership and a growing sense of despair around the world. While there is apparent discontent amongst a growing number of Americans, the discontent simply reinforces the division and the absence of any collective ownership of the problem that exists within the USA. This poem is a dare or a challenge to Americans of all stripes to take action NOW.
You have spoken loud and clear
You most value power and living in fear
Not only within the USA
But even with your neighbours who say eh
You and your leaders define great as might
Mistaken strength for causing fright
Yes, you’re large and very strong
But in the long run, you’ll be proven wrong
It’s not just the dollar or who controls trade
Or who threatens sovereignty and does invade
It’s not putting allies down and breaking ties
Nor the one who boasts a lot and tells most lies
You choose alone and to fight those who’ve been friends
To collaborate with other powers to your own mutual ends
You choose destruction and think you must always win
You think you’re better despite showing what’s within
So yes, you’re causing turmoil and great despair
Hurting yourself and using up the world’s fresh air
You are at the centre of most that is going bad
Proving you’re sick and making the world really sad
You’ve chosen a path and chosen also not to learn
That greatness comes from the soul and the respect one earns
We’ve heard your words and been subject of your action
We’ve had enough and see you as a grand abstraction
Where’s your backbone in the face of fighting wrong?
Where’s your humility in working with others to be strong?
Where’s your leadership in being and doing right?
Where’s your compassion for your soul to shine so bright?
You are at a crossroad and there is no time to spare
Do you have the courage and character to meet this dare
Moral leadership and character may yet define your true might
Can you stand up now and be a brand, new light?
