In the Face of a Dare

I am so fed up with the current American government and their treatment of other countries, including Canada. I wrote this poem in early January 2026 and as I look back at it, I am struck by by message and the coincidence with Prime Minister Carney’s speech in Davos (even though his speech was much more eloquent). We are facing a new dare to establish a new order amongst the chaos caused by the USA.

There are many feeling despair as if there’s no air
News dominated by people who don’t care
The world is at a point we’ve been before
It was at a time that led to a world war

A country putting itself above the well-being of all
Even if leading to chaos and its own ultimate downfall
An authoritarian agenda that is well out of control
Led by people who have no morality nor any soul

Without forgetting the other critical crises we all face
The word to describe American leadership is a disgrace
We can sit back and hope that all may be worked out
Yet the only question is power of that there is no doubt

With a daily agenda to screw with Canada no matter the truth
American leadership is worse than a chronically infected tooth
They can’t stand people with spine guided by values and self-worth
Or that they may be left behind as the world goes through a re-birth

So, what do we do and how do we stand for us all
Without getting into an all-out war and world-wide brawl
Daily, we can become more engaged and offer support
Be kind and thoughtful, and speak out for what we must thwart

Ask our leaders to collaborate wisely with our allies
To reinforce strength through cooperation, and not size
To stand together against the agenda of a doctrine of control
Based on values of trust and respect for each other and the whole

As Canadians and Canada, our resolve is to be one and strong
Living the words to our anthem and proudly singing our song
Reflective of our values and finding strength in how we care
We’re at a point where we must stand to confront a new dare
