As I floated in my swimming pool, I watched the ripples I caused with my actions. The poem almost wrote itself as a comparison to how we touch each other. Written in July 2018.
A pebble thrown; a drop of rain; a small indent in pond or lake
Reaching out in all directions, the circles widen, leaving a gentle wake
Then multiply the drops or pebbles, one can see the consequence
The ripples touch and crash together, broadening their circumference
As we gaze upon the surface, the moving waters will soon dissipate
Becoming once more nature’s mirror and leaving us to contemplate
Yet underneath the surface, there is extra water or maybe extra stones
The body is now more powerful; it’s potential still unknown.
If we take a human being, and treat them like lake or pond
Consider how we touch that person; there’ll be ripples way beyond
Add the actions of others; they will have no choice but to grow
Not only will that person shine, they’ll have more than one string in their bow
A simple action that causes change; no thought of impact at the time
Add intent to the equation, the ripple effect is both inspiring and sublime.
