Written in March 2025, I wrote this about the importance of siblings in our lives, particularly those who are older. They are there when we enter the world, serving as a model and then there throughout life whether they like it or not.
When I was born, you were there
You showed me always how to care
From the times when I was feeling alone or hurt
To those moments when you’d share your dessert
I followed you from morning ‘til the night
Sometimes obvious; some out of sight
I ate what you did so as to grow really strong
And never saw you doing anything wrong
You’d listen always to my little tales
Of my dreams to ride the rails
You’d talk of travelling really far
Across the seas and under different stars
I saw you work the fields all day long
Then sit down at night to share a song
Others were at peace when you were there
You set the standard for being fair
If you go to war, I’ll have your back
If you travel the world, I’ll help you pack
If you go elsewhere to work or learn
I’ll be there for support and take my turn
I’m like that velcro on a running shoe
Sticking forever like a crazy glue
In your shadow I will always be
To me you’ll always be my sturdy tree
I need and love you, and always will
You’re my brother/sister and help me chill
If I’m not there when you wake one day
You can be sure that I am on my way
I’ll always follow you to the end of the earth
I know that there will be an amazing worth
Together we’ll make it as pioneers
Me following you throughout our years.
