I wrote this poem in March 2025 as a reminder of how life is a gift and how the earth is very much a gift we have been given to care for and nurture. We often neglect both ourself and the world about us, and yet, we have an opportunity every day to give both extra love and attention.
Each day is a gift to be alive on this earth
A simple reflection of all we are worth
From the skies with moon, sun and stars
To the lands and seas all of them ours
We’ve been on this earth for many years
During which there have been both cheers and tears
Cheers for its beauty and awesome power
Tears for what we do which leave a taste sour
We were to care for what we had and been given
Investing in our talents and environment as if driven
Yet we’ve managed to waste and destroy so much
It’s hard to imagine there is left anything to touch
Yet the gift was so great received from the creator
No matter what we’ve done, we’ve still got a bit of later
With our brains and a renewed commitment to care
We’re changing the trajectory with no time to spare
The earth improves as we reduce the use of fuels
And we treat each other as rare and special jewels
So yes, it’s the physical element for which we must care
But as important is being respectful in ways beyond compare
We were given a place with beauty and all that we need
Forever plentiful if we live without greed
We were also given brains and hearts that made us distinct
With love and attention, we can avoid becoming extinct
With a look inside and living each day with gratitude
Our soul will be richer and like renewable food
For this is our gift to live with the spirit from above
Forever with hope, peace, joy and love.
